The Early Days
- By day 5 your milk has not ‘come in’ or transitioned
- Any nipple pain at all. Don’t believe in the myth that your nipples need to ‘toughen up’ Breastfeeding should NOT be painful. It is NOT normal to have nipple pain or trauma when breastfeeding.
- If your baby has less than 3 poops every 24 hours by day 5 (poops should turn yellow/seedy by then). 4 yellow stools by day 4 is what I recommend.
- If your baby is not nursing at LEAST 8 times a day.
- If your baby has a difficult time waking up or falls asleep quickly while breastfeeding
- If your baby is Jaundiced
- If your baby ‘never stops nursing’ or ‘never seems happy’ while breastfeeding
- While breastfeeding if you feel unhappy or depressed, or if breastfeeding seems difficult
- If your baby is receiving supplements/supplementation (even breast milk) for any reason
- If your baby is not gaining weight appropriately per the WHO breastfeeding growth charts
- If your baby is refusing the breast for any reason
